Sticking to the Roof of Your Eyeballs:
Polish Posters from the collection of John Lesser

At Subterranean Books
Subterranean Books has completed an extensive renovation of its gallery space and is delighted to announce a new poster show comprised of pieces on loan from local poster expert John Lesser. The show will be up from Friday, May 2 through Sunday, June 15.

Mr. Lesser’s poster collection wavers around the 500 mark, with various pieces of it on loan to St. Louis’s City Museum, Washington University, and St. Louis’s Opera Theater. And now Subterranean Books. The Polish posters that will be included in Sticking to the Roof of Your Eyeballs are all unforgettable images—they can be amusing, shocking, or repulsive, but always unforgettable. All of the pieces on exhibit were created for opera performances, and some of the pieces will address the same opera but by different artists. The operas represented include Boris Godonow, La Traviata, Fedora, The Magic Flute, and Il Trovatore. Mr. Lesser’s collection ranges from 1960’s through the early 2000’s, and the majority of the pieces on loan for the Subterranean show will be of the more recent variety. The two poster below are Fedora and The Magic Flute by Wieslaw Rosocha. For information call (314) 862-6100 or visit www.subbooks.com.

Through June 20
Peter Shank: Journey

In the Millstone Gallery at COCA
Journey is a retrospective of paintings by St. Louis artist Peter Shank. The exhibition features over 40 works from the 1960s through present day with some new works and all are based on his travels throughout the U.S., Europe and North Africa. The small scale gouache paintings, which often include collage, are more than just the snapshots of a tourist as they incorporate historical and social commentary. Journey is as much about Shank’s career as it is about his travels. Peter Shank has exhibited at the Saint Louis Art Museum, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Yale University and the Galerie Arch in Amsterdam. His commissioned work became the face of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and the COCA Family Theatre Series. For information call (314) 725-6555 or visit www.cocastl.org.

May 25
Vintage Vinyl In-Store: Blind Melon

At 2 p.m.
Very few bands recover professionally from the death of a lead vocalist. Most either disband or if they do choose to find a replacement they never quite seem to be able return to previous levels of success (AC/DC being the biggest exception). It would have been easy to wager Blind Melon would follow the rule rather than be an exception when vocalist Shannon Hoon passed in 1995. The band passively 'existed' for four years after the death before disbanding in 1999. Beating the craziest of odds, Blind Melon resurfaced in 2006 with new vocalist Travis Warren, new songs and a new lease on life, which has steamrolled into THE comeback album of 2008, "For My Friends". On May 25 beginning at 2 p.m. the comeback breakout story of 2008 stops in Vintage Vinyl as Blind Melon performs a special Sunday matinee instore performance. The band will perform new and classic tracks and then will be signing copies of "For My Friends" after the performance. For information call (314) 721-4096 or visit www.vintagevinyl.com.

Vintage Vinyl In-Store: Local H

At 8 p.m.
Vintage Vinyl has had a great and long relationship with Chicago rockers Local H, from multiple booth signings in the 90s at Pointfests to two instore performance in the '00s (a Scott solo show and their legendary Sullen covers set) so it is with great joy that we announce that Local H are performing an exclusive show here at Vintage Vinyl. The band is hitting the road in support of their brand new disc "12 Angry Months" and will be stopping in for a very special instore performance at Vintage Vinyl on May 27 at 8 p.m. that will also be their only St. Louis appearance this tour. Come to Vintage Vinyl and buy "12 Angry Months" and you will receive a free pass into the special instore performance as well a hand numbered, ultra limited to 1,000 red vinyl 7" single. That's right, purchase the CD and you get...the CD, a Local H 7" single AND an exclusive Local H performance. This event is a "to capacity" affair so move fast if you want to see Local H live in St. Louis. For information call (314) 721-4096 or visit www.vintagevinyl.com.

Vintage Vinyl In-Store: The Mhurs

At 7 p.m.
Get a free sample of the new east side rock sound, The Mhurs. While some have tagged the band as "psychedelic western swing" and while The Mhurs do sprinkle some slide and keys flavoring to their songs, in general the band is all rawk. With a nod to the Strokes and a possible wink to The Toadies, The Mhurs have quietly been making some big noise on the east side of the Mississippi and are bringing that noise to Vintage Vinyl on May 30 at 7 p.m. in celebration of their new CD "The Mhurs." The band's instore performance is free and all ages. For information call (314) 721-4096 or visit www.vintagevinyl.com.
